From April through August, Boca Grande Pass is home of the world's largest tarpon population. Capt. James Willis' tarpon fishing charters offer several different ways to experience Florida tarpon fishing at its finest including: beach fishing, Charlotte Harbor fishing, flats fishing and fishing the famous Boca Grande Pass.
The Boca Grande Pass features a depth of about 70ft and attracts hoards of tarpon. Tarpon anglers know this is the place to be in Southwest Florida and Boca Grande tarpon fishing is well-renowned for delivering non-stop action and excitement. Large bull sharks and hammerhead sharks, a tarpon's main predator, arrive in large numbers in the Boca Grande Pass just before the tarpon. While landing a tarpon, it is not uncommon to have to fight to keep your tarpon from becoming an easy meal for a hungry shark.
Beach and Backcountry tarpon fishing charters prefer to use artificial bait and have found it to be the easiest way to catch tarpon in Boca Grande Pass. Although the beaches, passes and Charlotte Harbor have seen a good number of catches using live bait, the most popular method to catch the silver king is on soft plastic lures. A small tarpon will typically be around 120 pounds, but it is not uncommon to catch a tarpon up to 220 or more pounds. Tarpon are known to deliver an impressive fight and can often take an experienced angler 25 minutes or more to boat a fish.
Prime Boca Grande Tarpon Fishing Times
We recommend tarpon fishing in the Boca Grande Pass during the weekdays. There are often weekends with over 100 boats in the Boca Grande Pass trying to catch a tarpon. Typical weekdays have only 15 to 30 boats in Boca Grande Pass and most are veteran fishing guides that work together. When it comes to hooking a tarpon on a weekday, every tarpon guide in the pass will get out of your way making your chances of landing a fish even greater than fishing the weekends, where you have to contend with 100 plus boats.
Florida Tarpon Fishing Seasons
The early tarpon fishing season in Charlotte Harbor is usually between mid April and mid May. Catching tarpon on the fly or live-bait fishing with spinning tackle is good at this time. For the anglers that prefer not to fish in the crowd and would rather be alone with giant tarpon, Charlotte Harbor has plenty of action with minimal pressure.
During the months of May, June and July all of the passes on Florida's west coast from Tampa Bay to Naples experience a crab flush. Tampa Bay and Boca Grande are the best places to fish at this time due to the amount of water both estuaries have to dump out into the Gulf of Mexico. On late afternoons and evenings of the new and full moon phases, the strong outgoing tides flush crabs out of the inshore flats and down into the Boca Grande. The tarpon gather in the depths of the Boca Grande Pass where they anxiously await an easy meal. Time and again, the Boca Grande Pass has proven it is the best place in the world to catch tarpon on the hill tide.
Excitement of Hill Tide Tarpon Fishing
During a hill tide rush, the tarpon are plentiful and ready to feed on the crabs. Beach and Backcountry tarpon fishing charters use those same crabs as bait and will often chase the tarpon offshore up to 3 or 4 miles. It is not uncommon to hook 20-50 fish when these tarpon go offshore. While most of the tarpon will go offshore, they will then turn around and come back to the inside of the pass which we call the hill. When they reach the hill Capt. Willis will drift through them, dragging crabs behind the boat, as well as toss crabs in front of rolling tarpon. When this happens, there are usually a lot of hook-ups; it is not uncommon for every angler on the boat to have a fish on. Hill tide tarpon fishing charters are action-packed and book fast,
