Florida backcountry fishing is known to be some of best backcountry fishing in the United States. This is largely due to Florida's vast forests of backcountry mangrove swamps and coastlines that are home to prized game fish such as juvenile tarpon, snook and redfish. Mangroves are thick tangles that grow in the brackish coastal environments. The roots of the mangroves reach below the surface to anchor the growth which is suspended above the surface of the water. The tangled messes of mangrove roots extend far below the water's surface and are home to a multitude of fish, crustaceans and shellfish. In addition to offering food and protection for game fish and their prey, southwest Florida's mangrove forests contribute to the health of the coastline as they stabilize the coast and help protect it from erosion caused by storm surges, floods, waves and wind.
Snook, redfish and juvenile tarpon are favorite Florida game fish because of their aggressiveness, large size, fierce fight and voracious appetite. Due to the shallow water found in the backcountry these fish can often be fished by sight, and skilled and patient anglers can often achieve success with fly fishing gear. Fishing the mangroves with live bait or artificial lures is also a popular method. An experienced Charlotte Harbor fishing guide will know the backcountry and where to find schools of redfish and snook.
